The Wheat from the Chaff #8

Hello, everyone! This week we have Bill Gates' vision of the AI era and Google releasing Bard to compete with ChatGPT

As part of my job, every week I read a lot of content about data, technology, and artificial intelligence (also known as AI). I filter them and send you the best ones, every Sunday.

Hello everyone ๐Ÿ‘‹ ,

How are you today? This week we have Bill Gates' perspective on the AI Era, Google releasing Bard to compete with ChatGPT, and China using AI to anchor news broadcasts and insights from the international data ecosystem.

It's time to separate THE WHEAT FROM THE CHAFFโ€ฆ

Less is More

This week Bill Gates wrote an article titled "The Age of AI has begun" on his personal blog. As the co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, he naturally shares a vision of using these new technologies to reduce social inequality.

The text reminds me that I recently attended the Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), an event that brings together radiologists, medical physicists, and other experts in medical imaging. On this occasion, I came across a statistic stating that if every person in the world had access to medical imaging exams, there wouldn't be enough professionals worldwide to issue the respective reports.

Tools and technologies are expected to impact the productivity growth of individuals. However, as they mature, some professions as we know thematically today will never cease to exist, while several others, yet unimaginable, will emerge. One of the major challenges in the coming years will be the requalification of professionals in this new scenario, in which the government plays a crucial role and needs to lead these discussions.

In this context, a passage from his text led me to reflect, in a free translation: "However, the demand for people who help other people will never disappear." The advancement of AI will enable individuals to dedicate themselves to activities that software will never be able to perform, such as teaching, caring for patients, and providing support to the elderly, for example.

Like most inventions, artificial intelligence can be used for either beneficial or detrimental purposes. However, 1 + 1 > 2 when we make use of collaborative intelligence between humans and AI.

Collaborative intelligence between humans and AI maximizes the synergy of complementary skills: leadership, teamwork, creativity, and social competencies combined with speed, scalability, and analytical capabilities. What humans do naturally can be complex or impossible for machines (as mentioned in Bill's letter), and what is simple for machines (analyzing gigabytes of data) may seem impossible for humans. Both philanthropy and businesses, as well as society, benefit from this "collaborative intelligence."

Enhancing our humanity with AI

This week, we inaugurate this section that showcases how AI can help and better serve society. We can always think about how artificial intelligence can identify and assist in solving problems whose absence would make the world a better place. One example is the development of a platform used by the Federal Police, which, through the analysis of thousands of photos, can quickly alert investigators to those that may contain child pornography materials, with an accuracy of 90%. In this case, AI increases efficiency in the search for evidence and strengthens the crackdown on those who engage in such crimes.

Guest of the Week: Bill Gates

This week, on his blog, the founder of Microsoft compared his first encounter with OpenAI's AI models (creator of ChatGPT) to his first encounter with the graphical user interface - a precursor to all modern operating systems, including Windows. This technology allowed the popularization of personal computers in the 1980s.
