The Wheat from the Chaff #6

This week we continue with the second topic of the series and address the ethical dilemmas of the AI revolution. In interesting news from Brazil, we have bills being processed in the Senate and a study on professions at risk due to AI. In the world, a very interesting article by the philosopher Luciano Floridi. To conclude, a tribute to women with a great interview with OpenAI's CTO, Mia Murati.

As part of my job, every week I read a lot of content about data, technology, and artificial intelligence (also known as AI). I filter them and send you the best ones, every Sunday.

Hello everyone đź‘‹ ,

This week we continue with the second topic of the series and address the ethical dilemmas of the AI revolution. In interesting news from Brazil, we have bills being processed in the Senate and a study on professions at risk due to AI. In the world, a very interesting article by the philosopher Luciano Floridi. To conclude, a tribute to women with a great interview with OpenAI's CTO, Mia Murati.

It is time to separate the wheat from the chaff…

Less is More

Following the line of the three texts we mentioned in our last "Wheat from the Chaff," today we will talk a little about the ethical dilemmas involved in this revolution that AI is causing. Before we proceed, I would like to express my gratitude for being alive and being able to experience (and work with) this moment. Furthermore, I understand that ChatGPT and other similar tools contribute positively in various situations, such as producing content for companies, and freelance professionals, and acting as a learning vector, as well as enabling many business models. With the disclaimer made, let's move on to the discussion!

We should never underestimate the movement of an important player, especially when it comes to Mark Zuckerberg. On February 24th, he announced his language model, following the line of ChatGPT, but with an interesting observation:

"To maintain integrity and prevent misuse, we are releasing our model under a non-commercial license. Access to the model will be granted, on a case-by-case basis, to academic researchers, affiliates of government, civil society, academic organizations, and industry research labs worldwide," Meta communicated. This is probably a move to capitalize on the issues (current and/or future) that their competitors are facing.

The natural question is: Is the problem in the imprecision, Jhon? There are several factors involved, but I highlight two important components: the imprecision associated with the adopted model, which synthesizes information and offers a single answer instead of reference links like traditional search engines. The answers provided by AI systems can be entirely false but appear very convincing. Since these systems don't understand meaning or context, they cannot "reason" about the connections and correlations extracted from data, which can lead to plausible but not necessarily true texts.

Tools like ChatGPT enable users, through a simple and intuitive interface, to connect with modern AI tools. This movement has allowed society to easily perceive the power of artificial intelligence, increasing pressure regarding the ethical dilemmas and challenges involved that affect society.

The first important point is to understand the developments and applications to mitigate potential side effects in different sectors of society, taking into account their respective characteristics. This understanding is fundamental for the elaboration of probable regulations.

A second point is to investigate the impacts on human beings, including questioning concepts considered established in society. It is a fact that all this movement changes the way we interact with technology, but what else can be affected? Will it have an impact on how we perceive language, human cognition, the learning process, communication, and sociability? Moreover, can we consider more complex themes, such as intelligence being an exclusive prerogative of human beings? Here, the discussion can go far! (lol)

The topic of ethics has been discussed by society since Aristotle, and we need to take a few more steps forward. Some choices need to be made, considering the involved trade-offs. The impacts of artificial intelligence on society's functioning are difficult to predict at this moment, but one thing is certain: we cannot ignore them.

We will see!

Guest of the Week: Mira Murati, CTO da Open AI

In honor of International Women's Day, we brought an interview with Mira Murati - CTO of OpenAI and leader of the teams behind DALL-E and ChatGPT - where she highlights relevant points about the urgency of regulating the use of AI.

"How do you govern the use of AI in line with human values?"
