The Wheat from the Chaff #11
In recent weeks, we extensively discussed the impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) on businesses, jobs, and society.
As part of my job, every week I read a lot of content about data, technology, and artificial intelligence (also known as AI). I filter them and send you the best ones, every Sunday.
Hello everyone 👋 ,
In recent weeks, we extensively discussed the impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) on businesses, jobs, and society. You might be wondering: How can all this technology actually help in my daily life? Therefore, today we will explore how you can use it, and describe its benefits and limitations, without compromising your privacy. Let's get started!
It is time to separate the wheat from the chaff…
Less is More
All this technology is closer than it seems, as every day various solutions are being developed using ChatGPT as a backdrop. I will divide it into three themes: time optimization, learning, and problem-solving.
We know that making better use of our time is a constant challenge, and we are always seeking solutions to this dilemma. Tools based on generative artificial intelligence, like the two mentioned below, enable real productivity gains, allowing us to invest the time saved in generating a positive impact on our daily routine. I will mention only two, but there are many other equally interesting ones.
Sharly (https://www.sharly.ai/): This tool allows you to upload any document and enables a chatbot that answers any questions about its content, indicating the specific excerpt and page containing the information. To test it, I uploaded a report from Fundo Atlântico, which discusses digital transformation in Latin America. After uploading, I requested a summary, of the key points, the sentiment expressed in the text, and the keywords. Additionally, I asked the chatbot to provide a list of all the locations and names mentioned in the document, and the tool responded correctly within seconds.
Tome (https://beta.tome.app/): It is astounding what this solution can do. You simply need to inform the type of document you want to create - in my case, a presentation - and provide more details about the context. Within seconds, a beautiful and complete presentation emerges, complete with an index, text distributed across slides, and illustrations coherent with the description provided in the beginning. The generated presentation can serve as an excellent starting point.
Considering the second theme, the world has become extremely dynamic, making the ability to update and quickly learn about new subjects a superpower. Often, we come across situations where we need to understand or recall a concept, as it is impossible to remember everything. In these cases, ChatGPT proves to be a great ally, and the challenge lies in formulating the question correctly. To illustrate, imagine you are reading the quarterly earnings report of a listed company and come across the acronym ESG for the first time. You can access the ChatGPT website (https://chat.openai.com/) and ask it to describe, in simple terms, the meaning of the acronym ESG. The response would be:
“ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance, representing three key factors used by investors and regulatory bodies to evaluate companies on their sustainability and ethical impact. Environmental criteria assess a company's stewardship of nature, considering elements like waste management and energy use. Social criteria scrutinize how the company manages relationships with employees, suppliers, customers, and communities, while Governance refers to the company's leadership, executive pay, audits, and transparency. Overall, ESG metrics are part of sustainable or socially responsible investing, aiming to promote business operations beneficial to society, the environment, and the economy.”
Regarding the third and final theme, from the moment we wake up, we start making decisions, a process that extends throughout the day. These choices can range from simple decisions, like what to eat for breakfast or what clothes to wear, to more complex issues, like whether your company should invest in a new growth strategy.
Out of curiosity, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg publicly stated in 2011 that he tends to wear white or black shirts every day to save time and energy in making decisions about what to wear, simplifying the possibilities of choice. According to him, this allows him to focus on more important issues that generate greater impact.
A tool called Rationale (https://rationale.jina.ai/) promises to assist managers in making better decisions, both personal and professional. You describe the decision you would like to make and provide the context; based on this information, the solution presents the pros and cons, and a SWOT analysis, among other decision support techniques, all based on artificial intelligence.
I mentioned that I would like to publish a monthly list of the best employees in my department and asked for the pros and cons. Among the pros: transparency, positive competition if done correctly, and recognition for good work. Among the cons: privacy concerns, the need to be cautious with subjective criteria, and the potential negative impact on employees who don't feel recognized.
This was just an example. You could consider your decision to build an office in region X of city Y. Rationale, based on public information and all the knowledge accumulated on the internet and its AI technology, presents the information in a way that supports you in making the best decision.
This is just the tip of the iceberg! The era of AI is only beginning! :)

Guest of the Week: Elon Musk & X.AI
This week, we have Elon Musk as our guest again. According to The Wall Street Journal, Elon founded an artificial intelligence-focused company called X.AI, which aims to compete with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. According to official records, the company's headquarters are located in Nevada, and was incorporated on March 9, 2023. However, as we mentioned in the previous edition #9, Elon Musk signed an open letter along with other experts a few weeks ago. In this letter, they called for a six-month pause in research related to Artificial Intelligence (AI).
